Saint Louis Soccer United unveils new Pro League/Team/Logo

On Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 Saint Louis Soccer United officials announced the new name, unveiled the logo and announced the men who will lead the city's new men's professional soccer team.
The name of the team is AC St. Louis and it will compete in the newly resurrected North American Soccer League, along with the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, Crystal Palace Baltimore, Miami FC Blues, Minnesota Thunder, Montreal Impact, Rochester Rhinos, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Vancouver Whitecaps. Claude Anelka was introduced as the head coach of AC St. Louis and Francisco Filho will be the director of player development.

Home games will be played at Soccer Park, which is also the home of the St. Louis Athletica of Women's Professional Soccer. Their season will start in the spring of 2010.

There was a good sized crowd on hand, including Harry Keough and Frank Borghi, members of the 1950 U.S. National team that upset England in the World Cup. Also, former St. Louis Stars who played in the previous NASL were there, including Pat McBride and Carl Gentile. Other members of St. Louis soccer's "royal family" in attendance were Steve Pecher, current U.S. National Team assistant coach Mike Sorber, former Florissant Valley head coach Pete Sorber, Tim Twellman, current MLS player Brad Davis, Don Popovich and former SIUE standout John Carenza. who was the old St. Louis Stars' very first draft choice. In addition, several members of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame were there, including former Lewis and Clark Community College and SIUE head coach Ed Huneke. Bill McDermott, himself a former St. Louis Soccer Hall of Famer and former St. Louis University Billiken acted as the Master of Ceremonies.  Tom Schwarz headed up the STLUFC contingency and is responsible for the images in the slideshow.
